SyrSpend SF Alka is a dry powder for reconstitution. SyrSpend SF Alka provides a reasonable solution for preparing oral liquid dosage forms with acid-labile active pharmaceutical ingredients, including furosemide. It is preservative-free and alcohol-free and is suitable for problematic patients, such as neonates. SyrSpend SF Alka also allows for direct compounding in the dispensing container for maximum efficiency if the prescription or order requires 100 mL. Research articles in ES&T must report original research that is expected to have a definable impact on the advancement of environmental chemistry, science, technology, and policy. ES&T welcomes rigorous scholarship on complex environmental processes and phenomena, particularly those affected by human activities. This includes chemical, biological, and physical phenomena in natural and engineered environmental systems, as well as mathematical and computational methods that are directly relevant to the understanding, protecting, restoring, and managing of the natural environment, including eliminating, minimizing, and mitigating human impacts. The journal also publishes articles that describe significant scientific advances or novel technologies for facilitating the solutions of critical environmental problems, including pollution remediation, control, prevention, and avoidance. Papers in the area of ecotoxicology and human environmental health should provide novel information on effects of chemicals or lead to new insights into the mechanisms and processes underlying effects of chemicals and other stressors. ES&T also encourages submission of studies that address challenges associated with the "Replacement, Reduction and Refinement" of animal studies. At submission, authors must provide a short synopsis statement (approximately 20 words), placed after the abstract, stating the environmental relevance and significance of their research work. Authors are also expected to provide an explanation in their cover letter why they believe the manuscript belongs in ES&T and why their research will interest our readers with an emphasis on the novelty and environmental relevance of the contribution.

In light of recent events, it is interesting to note that this edition of the book has a chapter devoted to pharmaceutical compounding errors. It refers to the New England Compounding Centre (NECC) case, which was the driving force for significant changes in the laws, regulations and standards relating to pharmaceutical compounding. The NECC was breaking the law by manufacturing drug products under the guise of compounding. As a result, 64 patients died following an outbreak of fungal meningitis that was traced to contaminated batches of methylprednisolone suspension intended for epidural use.


Pharmaceutical compounding provides pharmacists with a unique opportunity to practise their time-honoured profession. Although pharmacists should not hesitate to become involved in this aspect of the profession, they should be aware of the regulations and the risks involved. The art and science of compounding pharmaceutical preparations to develop an advanced understanding of formulation, stability, and quality standards of compounded pharmaceuticals. Focuses on pharmaceutical elegance; developing professional judgement based on limited data to assess the stability and efficacy of a compound before dispensing the preparation; the regulations governing compounding, including those outlined by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board, and other scientific and professional organizations; mechanisms for evaluation and analysis of the quality of a compounded formulation; and marketing and promotion of compounding services. Two lecture hours a week for one semester. Pharmacy 256R and Pharmacy PharmD 286R may not both be counted. Offered on the letter-grade basis only. Prerequisite: Phamacy PharmD 388M (or Pharmacy 356C) and 188P (or Pharmacy 156P).


Advanced compounding methods with respect to pharmaceutical dosage forms and formulations, with emphasis placed on creating formulations that satisfy unique patient needs, and a discussion of equipment used by compounding pharmacists to formulate preparations that satisfy those needs. Pharmacy PharmD 186S builds upon compounding skills taught in Pharmacy PharmD 188P. Three laboratory hours a week for one semester. Pharmacy 156S and Pharmacy PharmD 186S may not both be counted. General introduction to dosage forms, and the technology and pharmaceutical rationale fundamental to their development. Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Pharmacy 356C and Pharmacy PharmD 388M may not both be counted. Offered on the letter-grade basis only. Prerequisite: Pharmacy PharmD 387M (or Pharmacy 342C) and 187P (or Pharmacy 142P) and credit or registration for Pharmacy PharmD 188P (or Pharmacy 156P).


It may be obvious to you that a chemistry background is important if you plan to teach chemistry or to work in the chemical industry developing chemical commodities such as polymeric materials, pharmaceuticals, flavorings, preservatives, dyestuffs, or fragrances. You may also be aware that chemists are frequently employed as environmental scientists, chemical oceanographers, chemical information specialists, chemical engineers, and chemical salespersons. However, it may be less obvious to you that a significant knowledge of chemistry is often required in a number of related professions including medicine, pharmacy, medical technology, nuclear medicine, molecular biology, biotechnology, pharmacology, toxicology, paper science, pharmaceutical science, hazardous waste management, art conservation, forensic science and patent law.
